Garnet is one of the most important historical gemstones - beads of garnet have been found in prehistoric graves in Eastern Europe. The word "garnet" comes from the Latin "grarantus" meaning "grain". It is derived from the word "pomegranite" which has numerous red seeds. Most people today think of garnet as a semi precious stone. This may be the case in terms of garnets like Pyrope and Almandite which are deep red and brown-red, but beautiful, rare purple red Rhodolites are a different propostion altogether.
